The formula

Three measurement systems are in common use. Metric (SI) is decimal and used almost everywhere. Imperial is the older British system. US customary descends from the same ancestor but kept different volume measures, which is why the two disagree on gallons and pints while agreeing on feet and pounds.

Length and mass are identical between imperial and US customary — both define the inch as 0.0254 m and the pound as 0.45359237 kg. Only volume genuinely differs.

As with length, the pound is defined identically in both systems at 0.45359237 kg. Only when you move up to tons do imperial and US customary part ways.
