How to read Roman numerals
Seven symbols, two rules, and every year in the film credits decoded.
Roman numerals appear on clock faces, book chapters, film credits, monarch names, and the Super Bowl, yet the moment you need to read a long one — say the copyright year at the end of a film — most people stall. Roman numerals have outlived the empire that created them by nearly two thousand years, and they persist precisely because they look formal and permanent. That is why you find them carved on buildings, printed on the title pages of books, used to number monarchs and popes, and stamped on the biggest sporting events. The flip side is that they were never designed for calculation, so reading a long one takes a little decoding. The good news is that the entire system rests on just seven letters and two simple rules, which you can learn in a few minutes.
The seven symbols
The entire system is built from just seven letters, each with a fixed value:
- I = 1
- V = 5
- X = 10
- L = 50
- C = 100
- D = 500
- M = 1,000

The addition rule
Most of the time, you read a numeral by adding its symbols from left to right, largest first. So VIII is 5 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 8, and XV is 10 + 5 = 15. LXXVII is 50 + 10 + 10 + 5 + 1 + 1 = 77. The convention is to place larger symbols before smaller ones and total them up. This is why MMXXIV, the kind of year you see in film credits, reads as 1,000 + 1,000 + 10 + 10 + 4 = 2,024.
The subtraction rule
The one twist is that a smaller symbol placed before a larger one is subtracted, to avoid writing four of the same symbol in a row. So instead of IIII for 4, you write IV (5 − 1). Instead of VIIII for 9, you write IX (10 − 1). The valid subtractive pairs are limited:
- IV = 4, IX = 9
- XL = 40, XC = 90
- CD = 400, CM = 900
Only these six combinations are used. You never subtract more than one symbol at a time, and you only subtract powers of ten (I, X, C) from the next one or two sizes up. That is why 99 is XCIX (90 + 9), not the tempting but incorrect IC.
Reading a numeral step by step
To decode a long numeral, scan left to right and check each symbol against the one after it. If a symbol is smaller than the next, subtract it; otherwise add it. Take MCMXCIV: M is 1,000; CM is 900; XC is 90; IV is 4 — total 1,994. Breaking it into subtractive chunks (CM, XC, IV) rather than reading letter by letter is the trick that makes long years readable. With practice, common patterns like MCM (1,900) and MM (2,000) become instant.
Years: the most common use
Film and television credits, cornerstones, and book editions love Roman numerals for years. Recent ones follow a pattern once you see it:
- MM = 2000
- MMX = 2010
- MMXX = 2020
- MMXXIV = 2024
- MMXXV = 2025
Older years use the subtractive forms heavily: 1999 is MCMXCIX, and 1984 is MCMLXXXIV. When you spot MCM at the start, you know the year is in the 1900s, which speeds up reading credits considerably.
Why there is no zero
The Roman system has no symbol for zero and no concept of place value the way our decimal system does. Each symbol carries a fixed value regardless of position (except for the subtractive twist), so there is no "empty column" to mark with a zero. This is also why Roman numerals become unwieldy for large numbers and are useless for arithmetic — you cannot easily add or multiply them. They survived for labelling and numbering, where their formal, timeless look is an advantage, rather than for calculation.
The limits of the system
Standard Roman numerals run comfortably up to 3,999 (MMMCMXCIX). Beyond that you would need four M's or special notation with bars over letters to indicate multiplication by a thousand, which is rarely used today. For everyday purposes — clocks, chapters, years, monarch and pope names, sporting events — you will never exceed a few thousand, so the seven basic symbols and the two rules cover essentially everything you will meet.
Writing a number as a numeral
To convert the other way, break the number into thousands, hundreds, tens, and units, and translate each part. For 1,994: 1,000 is M, 900 is CM, 90 is XC, 4 is IV, giving MCMXCIV. Working place by place and applying the subtractive pairs where a digit is 4 or 9 produces the correct numeral every time.
